Final Piece | Images and Ideas

After research and development I wanted to choose sections for my photographs to go in, then pick one from each section to represent the categories I had picked. I put my work into a section then under it a subsection.
Addiction and Mental Health.

Self Harm

In these photographs I wanted to develop my previous ideas to make it look more severe. To capture a juxtaposition between the photo and the presentation. I had to capture the cuts looking intensional.

Out of the pictures I like the more zoomed in picture at the bottom, this is because I like the vunerability caught in the arm. Like she is trying hard not to cover them. She finds peace in trying having something close to hide them with. I prefer it in black and white because of the intensity caught within the picture. It really contrasts the cuts better. And the skin really sticks out. The

 Gambling

Under the section of addiction of mental health I wanted to show something that was very normal and simple but really is an easy addiction.
On the first photograph I really did like the main subject being off centre however I do not feel it works as well as the lottery tickets up close.

What I like about the photograph is that it captures snippits of each lottery and scratch card. Also I like the pig holding the money because it gives out to the buyer that this money will bring you happiness. The high colour contrast on these photographs also bring a contrast to the rest of my pictures that are black and white, so in consideration of presentation this is a major pro.

In comparison to the black and white photo below which is really quite grey put pulling away colours on photoshop made it look not as bright but it made it look really haunting.

Sex

Within these photographs I didn't want there to be any glamour, so I made sure there was no distractions such as rings or nail polish. I chose the idea of black and white to show no excitement to it. Within the composition I do like the plug hole and the plug because it makes it believable. Also I like the Shadowing around the hand and round the edge of the photograph.

Within the two colour photographs I was playing with the poses. And What I really liked was the idea of reality caught in the colour. Unlike black and white it shows real emotion and beauty caught in the colour. However the post at the top catches the most natural pose for me. I lie both but I like how much closer the test is to the camera on the top photograph.

Another idea for development was the idea of the sexualisation of clubs. I found a club in town which I felt nterpreted the red light district with this red light. Just for development and more ideas I photographed it. I like the colour caught in the top and behind the bars the opening times. However I dont  think Im going to use it it was just really more widening of ideas.

Poverty/Homelessness
What I like about the photo above is the contrast caught within these people struggling in comparison the the people walkiing past. I caught it at a time when no one was looking at them which is exactly what society does. They turn a blind eye to issues such as poverty and would rather keep it backstage.

Within the first two photos I originally cut it down to just the man. What I liked about this was it really made you home in on just him and the shop, which really contrast each other. Homelessness in comparison to expensive jewellery. I think it is an interesting concept as it makes you think where would the money spent on watches be better spent. But a lot of people choose to ignore this fact and carry on to think that keeping ideas such as homelessness backstage so they don't have the guilt of worrying about how there money is spent. After cropping it I again looked at the original photo and decided to try keeping the girl in it. Not only did it widen the frame it showed exactly how de sensitised people are to it. She is completely zoning out past him.
However I felt the eye contact photo was a lot stronger because of the intensity caught in his eyes. He straight away grabs your attention and immediately makes you think exactly why do we not want to help venerable people.
Stephen Wrights urban and grungey photography (research on previous page) helped me choose to convert them all to black and white because of the colours on the original photographs were to distracting and took away from the centre points of the photo. Black and white takes away and glamour and adds a hard edge to it and adds a sort of grungey street effect.
Un social Behaviour

When in town I found something people really want to keep backstage is there time. When looking on the street I saw many people avoid these charity workers and keep themselves backstage. What I like about these photographs is the one of the man his body language is pointing away from the man which represents exactly my last point. I put up the second photo just to contrast the look of colour and black and white. Developing my ideas I chose the black and white caught shadowing a lot better but the colour really showed the idea of the need to be noticed through there bright clothing.

 Bad Habits

The two photos above were some development on the research I had done before this of urban and street photography. The idea of showing the dirt and gunk from smoking. I liked the original photo so much I wanted to develop the idea into my own. I think one of the major ideas for this photo is it is hard to tell what it is. It makes you think exactly what are smokers putting into there body. And is this why it is kept backstage so much, and is it a positive that smoking is not seen as glamorous.

Within the photograph above I like the idea of how much the colours and patterns of the logo contrast the horrible place where the photograph was taken. I found this can on the floor surrounded by cigarettes and dirt. I think this is a good representation of backstage because it was hidden by a small metal fence.

The photos above were to develop an earlier photograph of cigarettes, when photographing them earlier they were in a bin on a street, however finding them on the floor on the street shows they had been dropped. I think the cigarettes being soggy and trampled into the ground home in on the idea that it is not glamorous, and that is why it is a massive taboo bad habit they people may not be proud of.
When looking at the two photographs I wanted to be concoius of the colouring because of how much black and white I had looked at and it really adds detail like in the filter, but also it highlights the horrible burnt out ends where in the black and white they are to similar to the floor. Therefor I want to use the colour photograph.

Religious Taboos

When choosing my work I wanted something to contrast the ideas I've looked at but keep the street style photography. I gained contrast to some of the other pictures by using a model set up, however I wanted to achieve the natural light like I had in other photographs, I did this by taking these photos outside. I think this was such an exciting part of my project because of the constant taboos that are gathered round head scarves. Adding this in helped me develop a broader range of technique.
Taking the photos so close up meant I had to be very careful that everything within the photograph was necessary, the first three photos helped me explore shape and idea and the final photograph was the one I liked most because there is nothing distracting about it. The placing of the model makes it very simple, but effective. The use of black and white really helped gather a look of being hidden.
Not only did this help me look at the idea of societies idea of wanting to keep headscarfs hidden through lack of knowledge about them, but also it makes you think why women choose to keep themselves hidden or backstage. This helped me decide the eye contact was necessary because I wanted there to be direct contact with the model and the viewer.
