When preparing my final images I took some time to explore some structured ideas for my final piece. Within this I chose sections for my final piece. I did this while being conscious of the styles I looked at on my previous page.
Bad habits
My first section of work was looking at bad habits, I chose within this to look at smoking as it is such a huge society taboo.
I fond this open cigarette bin in town, what I liked about it was the grubbiness you can see from around it. Also using black and white showed the muck from around it and the shadows created within the bin make the contrast of the white really stand out.
This photograph was taken in a section of Nottingham with many clubs. So the irony of this photograph was something I found really interesting. However technically I love the light sky in contrast to the red circle. The darkness caught behind the sign also contrasts with it.
I like this photograph because of the positioning of the words being off centre but also how the words are so bright contrasting to the background. Also I like the reflection found in the mirroring underneath.
Unsociable Behaviour
What I was hoping to achieve with this photograph was the idea of people wanting to keep themselves behind there phone than talk to strangers. For example it is a taboo subject to talk to someone on public transport. The focus being so close to the hand focuses in on the finer details.
Sex
When looking at taboos and things society wanted to keep backstage sex is a huge topic. For example teenage sex and pregnancy.
The vibrancy of this photograph was something I didn't want to loose, but actually something I wanted to enhance when editing. Also it being off centre meant it stood out really efficiently. The use of colour is also something I want incorporated after a lot of my other work has been black and white.
Worn Down Parts of Society
Keeping a clear idea of my original photographers looking at places society wanted to keep backstage. Mikes work had a lot of relevance to this. The idea of having places no one wants to see because they are grotty and dirty, made into beautiful photos. What I like about this is the use of shadowing to create the grubbiness of the photo. Little highlights are actually bought out and a lot of grey scale was bought out through my editing.
Anti Social Behaviour
Another section of work I wanted to look at is the idea of graffiti as an art form being a massive embarrassment to society. Although it being extremely prevalent in all areas of Nottingham it is a massive subject to be considered as weather it is anti social or art. What I like about the above photo is the fencing panels being really prevalent to the picture. They add shapes to the picture that wouldn't necessarily be there if it was on something flat.
This again is another example of exciting shapes found in something that is quite simple. The use of juxtaposing ideas on this wall is something I find really ironic. Society is embarrassed of the nations drinking and smoking habits but encourage giving generously. so this looks at something society doesn't want to keep backstage.
When experimenting editing this photo you lost the words when grey scaling it but upping the colour contrast bought them out nicely in comparison to the wall.
Personal Addiction
Mental health is something society has a problem with being open about. So i decided to explore this in my work by looking at gambling and self harm.
I felt out the two the black and white photo had less distractions on because the shadows were contrasted out during editing. What I like about this photo although it is a tacky sign the black and white some how adds a sophisticated and tasteful look to it. Unlike the colour one. Gambling in something that is sexualised and made to seem important by it being something for rich people. However the gambling I wanted to explore is the sort of gambling that is for every day people to fall into. Such as scratch cards, lottery, on line casinos and bingo.
Self harm was my final look at personal addiction is it is something that is immediately hidden by society. People hide cuts and burns ect to not be questioned on them maybe due to feeling vulnerable or even like an "attention seeker" This idea of vulnerability in the addiction of self harm is something that I hope to work on by possibly looking at more severe types of self harm.
I like the vulnerabiltly found in the hands of the first photo but I don't believe my model was positioned particularly well which is something I had worked on in the black and white piece. However a lot of the colour is important to the picture so I don't feel for this sort of picture black and white works best.
